Faïence peinte à la main à Deruta (Italie)

Matthieu Cossé and WE DO NOT WORK ALONE initiated a collaboration in order to create artisanal tableware. The Tête and Fontaine plates, the Pichet Grec pitcher and the Volière bowl are the results of this collaboration between them and the Italian manufacture Sambuco, in Deruta. The idea of making this edition in the little village of Deruta has risen from the discovery of Sol Lewitt’s ceramics. After buying a house near the village, the American artist started to make tableware and tiles with the town’s ceramists that are still edited today. Since the 15th century, Deruta is one of the main Italian center for painted figurative ceramic, also called majolica.

Matthieu Cossé worked from Sambuco’s traditional shapes, creating original drawings for each shape. Those drawings are then handpainted by Sambuco’s artisans.

Matthieu Cossé’s work is a permanent experiment around questions regarding drawing and figuration. For the past few years, he led researches on drawings on ceramic.

Matthieu Cossé is a French artist born in 1983, he currently lives and works in Paris.

This tableware ensemble is a limited edition of 100 copies and his first collaboration with WE DO NOT WORK ALONE.
